Shouse
As Jared begins thinking of moving out of his rental and buying land, we decided it would be great to build something small of our own. At this age and stage, we don’t have the money or the need to build a full out house. I always had said I wanted to design and build my own house, and my dream house is too big for what we can afford or need at this time. So instead we settled on designing a shouse.
The goal is to keep the costs of the home low, and eventually be able to turn it into a full shop. I began researching and drawing my plans. The goal is a 20’x40’ floor plan, with an upper loft bedroom covering just over half up the upper level. Even shops can be expensive, and with furnishings we knew this would be costly. Thus, we decided to make it roughly half the size of what we would want our shop to be in the future. I designed the roof with a mono slope, in order to be able to remove a wall and add on to the other half to double the shop size in the future. This half of the shouse would eventually have a 14’ high garage door, however for a living situation, to maintain efficient insulation for cooling and heating, we will lay out the header and fram for the door, but put in a standard framed wall in it’s place. The floors will be all cement on the main floor, and I will use Epoxy cement paint in gray, with black/white mix paint chips to add color and make the shouse look sleek. Also, I designed a floor layout for all the furtniture, and include numerous rugs to cover the cold cement. The bathroom will have a walk in shower with a cement base and edging, and a standard shower curtain. To make use of space, I decided on placing the washer/dryer machines underneath the stairway. I opted to make the stairway 4 feet wide, which will help with moving large furniture up and down stairs, and eventually using the upstairs as storage in the shop.
